Deepening Strategic Ties

The upcoming visit underscores the deepening relationship between Beijing and Moscow. The two leaders are expected to sign several bilateral agreements covering areas such as trade, infrastructure, and defense cooperation. This marks President Xi’s third visit to Russia since the onset of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, highlighting the importance both nations place on their alliance.

China maintains a position of neutrality regarding the Ukraine conflict but has supported Russia’s narrative of Western provocation. Additionally, China continues to supply essential components for Russia’s weapons manufacturing, further solidifying their economic and strategic ties.AP News

Participation in Victory Day Events

President Xi’s visit aligns with Russia’s Victory Day festivities, a significant national event marking the end of World War II in Europe. The 80th anniversary is expected to be attended by several international leaders, including those from Brazil, Serbia, and Slovakia. The celebrations serve as a platform for Russia to showcase its historical achievements and foster diplomatic relations.

Geopolitical Implications and Ceasefire Proposals

In the lead-up to the Victory Day events, President Putin announced a unilateral three-day ceasefire in Ukraine from May 8 to 10, citing humanitarian reasons. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded by proposing a 30-day ceasefire, which was rejected by Russia. Zelenskyy also expressed concerns about the safety of foreign dignitaries attending the Moscow celebrations amid ongoing hostilities.
