Tragedy Strikes Chatham: Four Lives Lost in After-School Program Crash

A devastating incident took place on April 28, 2025, in Chatham, Illinois, when a vehicle crashed into the YNOT After-School Program, killing at least four children and injuring six others. Incident Overview

At approximately 3:20 p.m. CT, a vehicle veered off the road, crossed a field, and struck the eastern side of the YNOT After-School Program, located at 301 Breckenridge Road. The vehicle continued through the building, hitting several individuals before exiting on the opposite side.

Victims Identified

The tragic loss of life includes three children—Alma Buhnerkempe (7), Kathryn Corley (7), and Ainsley Johnson (8)—and one adult, Rylee Britton (18), from Springfield. The injuries sustained by others range from minor to critical, with one person reported to be in critical condition.

Driver Information

The driver of the vehicle, 44-year-old Marianne Akers of Chatham, was the only occupant of the car and was uninjured in the crash. Akers was transported to a hospital for evaluation, and toxicology reports are still pending. As of the latest reports, Akers has not been arrested, and the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Community and Official Responses

In response to the tragedy, Governor JB Pritzker expressed his deep sorrow, calling it a “terrible tragedy” and offering his condolences to the families affected. U.S. Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi also voiced his sympathies, emphasizing the heartbreak experienced by the local community.

Investigation Status

Illinois State Police have indicated that the crash does not appear to be intentional. The investigation is ongoing as authorities continue to examine all factors contributing to this tragic event.
