Israel Urges Qatar to Clarify Its Role in Gaza Mediation Efforts

Israel has publicly called on Qatar to “stop playing both sides” in the ongoing Gaza conflict negotiations, urging the Gulf state to clarify whether it supports Hamas or aligns with international peace efforts. Israel’s Public Appeal to Qatar

On May 3, 2025, Israel’s Prime Minister’s Office issued a statement asking Qatar to choose a side — “civilization or Hamas.” The message criticized what it called Qatar’s “double talk” and insisted that peace talks require full transparency from all involved mediators.

Qatar Responds to the Accusation

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Majed Al-Ansari, rejected Israel’s claims, calling them “inflammatory and irresponsible.” In a direct rebuke, Al-Ansari accused Israel of using manipulative narratives similar to those used by “fascist and Nazi regimes,” especially when addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He also highlighted the conditions of civilians under blockade — facing starvation, lack of medicine, and homelessness.

Ceasefire Talks Remain at a Deadlock

Despite months of mediation by Qatar and Egypt, ceasefire negotiations have yet to yield results. Israel continues to demand the return of 59 remaining hostages and insists on excluding Hamas from any future governance structure in Gaza. Hamas, however, maintains that a permanent ceasefire and full withdrawal of Israeli forces are necessary conditions for any deal.

Israel Moves Toward Expanded Military Action

Israel’s security cabinet has approved plans for a broader military operation in Gaza, signalling a new phase in the conflict that began on October 7, 2023, following a deadly Hamas-led attack. Since then, the war has resulted in over 50,000 Palestinian deaths and widespread destruction across the Gaza Strip.
